1. Lots of Windows tablet adoption

Microsoft has released some very cool tablets in the past six months from Dell, Nokia, Lenovo, and HP. The most common reasons for Windows adoption appear to be:

  • The majority of existing enterprise IT ecosystems are Windows-based. Therefore, it’s easy to integrate and manage Windows tablets in terms of security, access control, support and maintenance.
  • There is no need to VPN as Windows tablets have access to all existing enterprise apps.
  • Less hassle for users.
  • Use all the features of Microsoft Office straight out of the box.

2. Android is perceived as “an enterprise security risk”

Many organizations feel that Android has a long way to go before it will become adopted. The reason behind this skepticism in Android adoption is the perceived security risk by many enterprises. At the conference, the majority of organizations that were using Android indicated that it was because it was a cheaper tablet option.

3. Security is a big enterprise concern

Businesses are increasingly concerned about security. A few days ago, Gregg Steinhafel, the CEO of Target was fired for a massive data breach of personal customer information. Since the breach was disclosed to the public, it greatly affected the company’s profit, sales, and stock price. Another example is the controversial case of former contractor to the NSA, Edward Snowden, who leaked data about the US government’s data collection practices. It was mentioned at the conference numerous times that IT administrators are often behind data security breaches.

4. Panel Prediction: Apps communicating with each other

Alex Bratton, author of Billion Dollar Apps, predicted that the future of apps will be the ability to integrate with each other as he referred to as a “suite of apps”. A user could be doing a task on one app and seamlessly switch to another application without the user even noticing. His prediction is on the basis that apps of the future will have more integration and complement each other.

5. Mobile Device Management (MDM) is critical for enterprises

Tablets are being treated as the core of MDM across enterprises for better data management. GE Capital – whose CIO, Sales & Marketing Susan Lasota was giving the keynote address – uses AirWatch, Good Technology and VPN.

6. The tablet is advancing Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Although there is a concern for data security, tablets are having an increasing presence for BYOD strategies.

7. Enterprise sales division are adopting tablets

Tablet adoption is taking off in the sales world. Tablets are more mobile than a laptop and allow salespeople to travel light and be better informed on the go.

8. Data collection is simplified and streamlined by tablets

Tablets are the perfect replacement for pen and paper data collection: Tablets eliminate the need for manual data entry as information is collected at its source.

9. Hospitality: Mobile Tech Replacing Pen and Paper

Wyndham Vacation Ownership is adopting tablets, phones, and iPods everywhere. Wyndham bought 3,600 iPads and invested $1.7 million in mobile devices. Wyndham is using iPads to replace magazines and iPods to replace paper clipboards for cleaning staff while managing rooms. They are also using iPads to provide training materials to sales reps.
