Made of heavy gauge steel, the Compass Mobile Stand for iPad/iPad 2’s smooth lines and sturdy joints scream quality from the moment you remove it from its travel case. Once unfolded, the stand can be used in two different configurations. As an an easel, you can prop up an iPad in portrait or landscape orientations. As a low rise stand, it provides your tablet’s screen with the perfect pitch for typing.
The Compass’ steel body is complimented by high quality non-slip footpads as well as rubberized pads to protect your tablet from the stand, as well as help to prevent it from slipping off. When it comes to mobile tablet stands, it doesn’t get much better than this.
Still, it’s not for everyone.
While the Compass works great on flat surfaces, it’s abysmal for use under any other conditions. If you’re looking for a stand to help you type with a tablet in your lap, it's definitely not for you. Additionally and even more unfortunately, we found that that when stowed in its travel case, the Compass greatly displeases airport screening personnel. When run through an X-ray machine, we've been told, the stand’s collapsed profile resembles that of a fixed-blade knife.
