Rumor: Acer to release $99 Kindle Fire killer and affordable Windows 8 tablets in 2013

December 24, 2012

According to a “person with direct knowledge of the project”, the Wall Street Journal reports that Acer is looking to release a 7-inch Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) at just $99 sometime in early 2013.

This 7-inch model is apparently codenamed the Acer Iconia B1 and will sport a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1024 x 600 resolution display, says the source, which adds that Acer is taking this move to compete with Amazon’s Kindle Fire (starting from $159) and Google’s Nexus 7 ($199).

Purported images of the device recently leaked to a Serbian forum and are believed to be genuine, while the 7-inch tablet is apparently to be marketed towards fast growing emerging markets.

Acer recently launched its first Windows 8 tablet, the Iconia W510, and could be set to add to that model in the new year according to the WSJ report.

The newspaper’s source says that the Taiwanese vendor will aim to make cheap, value Windows 8 tablets in 2013, with the company currently said to consider Windows-based tablets to be “too pricey”.
