WitsView, a research division of Trendforce, forecasts tablet shipments worldwide will reach 205.5 million in 2014, up less than five percent from the previous year.

Some of the slowing growth may be a question of definition. For example, Witsview says tablets are losing market share to phablets and low-priced notebooks which some may consider in the tablet category albeit with a smaller touchscreen in the case of a phablet and a heavier design in the case of notebooks that can convert to a touchscreen tablet.

“Leading vendor Apple’s tablet shipments remained low in Q2 2014, estimated at only 13 million,” said Eric Chiou, Research Manager at WitsView.

Although cast in a negative light, WitsView says it expects Samsung’s tablet sales globally to fall short of expectations at “only” 14% growth in 2014 to 48 million. WitsView says sales of Samsung’s new high end Galaxy Tab Pro haven’t met sales forecasts while the South Korean tech giant faces a slew of competitors to its lower end models.
