Tim Cook’s company has cut iPad mini shipments to between 10-12 million units for the second quarter, according to Digitimes, which cited multiple sources who provide various components for Apple’s 7.85-inch tablet.
The source notes that Apple has cut the shipments target because of “increased competition from various 7-inch Android tablets” and also attributes the move to the impending launch of the next-generation iPad mini, which is now expected to launch in Q3.
The second-generation iPad mini is expected to boast a 2048 x 1536 resolution Retina Display, a faster A6X processor as well as an improved rear-facing camera. All of these perks will come at a cost though, with analysts estimating that the model will debut at a higher price than the original model, which starts at $329.
According to reports, Apple now expects to ship 55 million 9.7-inch iPads in 2013, as well as 33 million iPad minis. But such is the rising demand for smaller tablets that one research group believes Apple actually expects to sell more iPad minis than full-sized iPads.
