Today Apple announced it has already sold three million new iPads since its launch last Friday March 16.  Some reports had Apple selling between 2 and 3 million of the new iPad by the end of March, but Apple cleared that bar easily. Apple earlier had described sales based on pre-orders of the device as "off the charts."

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, confirmed the 3 million figure makes it the strongest iPad launch of the three so far. “Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can't wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday,” he said in a release.

The new iPad launch was the start of a global launch with availability in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands.

Apple announced today that it will be available in 24 more countries starting at 8:00 a.m. local time on Friday, March 23 through the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. The additional countries include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
