Apple is beginning to talk and show more about its first original TV shows that it plans to offer subscribers of its Apple Music service. Along with Carpool Karaoke, based on the popular segment on CBS’s The Late Late Show with James Corden, Apple released a trailer this week for Planet of the Apps, a competition-style reality show.
The show itself is clearly modeled after ABC’s Shark Tank, where people with startup businesses try to convince a panel of investors to give them money to jump start their companies. In this case, the trailer for Planet of the Apps shows app creators making pitches to a panel of experts. Those experts then pick teams they like and help mentor them through the app development process. The best apps that come from this show may get full funding from VC firm Lightspeed Venture.
However, some of the people on this show’s panel don’t seem to have a lot of tech or app experience. One of them is actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who on the surface doesn’t appear to have a tech background. Another unlikely app mentor is actress Jessica Alba, who does have some business experience as the co-founder of The Honest Company.
Music artist will.i.am is also on the panel, but again he does have some experience in launching or promoting tech products. The only person on the Planet of the Apps panel, at least in this trailer, that works primarily in the tech industry is Gary Vaynerchuk, who has actually invested money in companies like Tumblr.
Planet of the Apps was designed to get more people to sign up for Apple Music, with the company hoping it will make it stand out from other streaming music services like rival Spotify. Apple plans to premiere Planet of the Apps sometime in the next few months, and will release a new episode the old-fashioned way, once a week.
