BBC brings News app to Android tablets

January 27, 2012

The News app has been available for Android smartphones for some time, clocking up over three million global downloads since its launch last year, but the new app allows large Android tablets to enjoy the news coverage.

The new version is for Android tablets running Honeycomb (Android 3.0) or above, and for devices of 8-inch and above. Smaller 7.1-inch tablets will continue to run on the smartphone app.

The app will allow users to navigate through the key news sections in both landscape and portrait mode, with BBC saying that the user will be able to personalize what they read, while also being offered the opportunity to share stories or view on-demand video in both 3G and WiFi.

The BBC is working on launching a live News Channel app for future, and says that its news sites and apps are visited by around 9.7 million users worldwide on mobile and tablet devices, in an average week. That represents around 26% of BBC’s total traffic.
