BlackBerry confirms BB10 will come to the PlayBook; weighs next tablet move

January 30, 2013

Speaking at the unveiling of BB10 in New York, CEO Thorsten Heins said that the firm is “working on” pushing out the software for the PlayBook but stressed that the company will only make tablets again if the terms are right.

“The way I look at the tablet business is this: providing profit to shareholders on hardware only is difficult. We will continue in the tablet space, but we want to provide a value proposition that isn't just the hardware," said Heins.

The CEO then gave more than a hint that the company, which has been renamed from Research in Motion, has struggled with poor PlayBook sales. “We want a tablet to be able to make money before we put it out there again.”

In the lead-up to the launch of BB10, rumors abound that the company intends to stay in the tablet business.

One report earlier this week hinted that the firm may be working on a BlackBerry 10 tablet, while earlier rumors have suggested that the company has been intending to launch a larger tablet in the autumn of 2013.
