According to the Financial Times, this move follows similar launches from Thomson Reuters and Markit and will see the ‘Bloomberg App Portal' launch later today (Tuesday 13 November).
The app store has supposedly been tested over the launch year and will enable Bloomberg to add content, take a 30% cut of revenues generated by app sales and keep its approximate 315,000 Business Professional users up to date throughout the day.
“I know a lot of people thought of us as sort of a closed system. Maybe this will make people look at us a bit differently,” said Tom Secunda, a co-founder of Bloomberg and head of core Bloomberg Professional service, which charges users $20,000 a year to use a single financial data console.
There are reportedly 45 applications on the Bloomberg App Portal so far, with these ranging from data analysis and news to research, valuation and pricing, and data visualization.
Apps on the store will be compatible on the Bloomberg Professional service software platform, which is accessible from any Internet-connected desktop as well as from Bloomberg's own range of Professional mobile apps for BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone and Android.
