Developers happy to embrace Apple’s iPad Mini as a good thing

With the Mini set to launch at some Apple retail stores tomorrow morning, a number of articles round-up the views of apps developers, to get their take on Apple’s latest tablet.

The biggest relief across all these developers was that the 7.9-inch iPad Mini maintains the same 4:3 aspect ratio as on all previous iPads.

“The iPad Mini screen resolution is exactly the same as the iPad 2 at 1024 x 768, so apps will easily fit into the 7.9-inch display without any extra development work,” wrote Mubaloo developers David Dixon and James Frost in an article for Developer-Tech.

Both then went onto add that app designers will need to “ensure they are producing images for each type of display”, but concluded that the 4G-enabled iPad Mini with the older A5 processor will open up to developers creating both rich media apps as well as 3D games.

Paper designer Andrew S. Allen was similarly impressed with Apple's new tablet, expressing to The Verge that the extra portability will be a bonus, but one-time Flipboard iPhone app designer Craig Mod told the same source that the new screen size could become an issue.

"[The iPad mini] will be a concern for apps that did a poor job designing for the larger model, and for apps that are too busy and have too many things going on one screen.”

If that was a minor quibble, others were most enthusiastic on the possibilities of the Mini, especially when it comes to gaming.

“We see a bunch of things that are good for gamers here,” Doug Scott, vice president of marketing at DeNA’s Ngmoco game division, told VentureBeat.

“It’s backward compatible with iPad software. And any time that Apple jumps into a market, it legitimizes it and brings a lot of attention to that device type. There will be a rising tide for mini tablets, and that will drive awareness for gamers who might not have considered a tablet.”
