Black Friday, Cyber Monday and now, thanks to tablets, Sofa Sunday (Infographic)

by David Needle

December 3 2013

We already know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but now an online catalog firm is trying to add “Sofa Sunday” to the mix of popular online shopping terms.

The basic idea is identifying the Sunday after Thanksgiving as a distinctly hot period for online shopping thanks to it being a long holiday weekend of advertised bargains and the ready access to shopping sites on your tablet while you relax on the sofa or elsewhere.

Catalog Spree detailed its findings based on where users of its mobile shopping app (for iPhone and iPad) shopped the most. (Catalog Spree was a recent Tabby Awards finalist for best Shopping app).

In all the company found a 74% increase in shopping on ‘Sofa Sunday’ compared  to last year. Users viewed nearly 1.3 million online catalog pages and users in New York City shopped the most. Also, based on traffic, the heaviest shopping times during Sofa Sunday were 7:00 a.m. PST and 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. PST.

Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday

Separately, ecommerce platform provider ShopPad released a report based on the over 14,000 retailers that use its software that says 30% of ecommerce traffic came from tablets and smartphones over the Thanksgiving holiday period (including Black Friday, Sofa Sunday and Cyber Monday).

ShopPad says Black Friday had 20% more mobile transactions than Cyber Monday.

And for the fourth straight year ShopPad says the iPad dominates its tablet competitors in average order value, conversion rate and overall traffic. In comparison to shoppers on smartphones, tablet users took their time, browsing nearly 3x longer before making a purchase.

On a geographical basis ShopPad said California had the highest volume of mobile sales beating out New York, Texas, Michican and Illinois rounding out the top 5.
