Research done by mobile analytics company Distimo for its 2013 year in review report found that the top-grossing apps in both Apple's App Store and the Google Play store worldwide continue to be mostly games. All ten top-grossing apps on iOS in 2013 were games.
In the App Store, Candy Crush led the pack at number one, while Clash of Clans secured the number two spot. On Android Candy Crush was number two, having been beaten only by GungHo's Puzzle & Dragons. All of these games are free-to-play. The messaging app Line came in third, with variations on it taking up other spots in the Android top ten as well.
There are no specific numbers available, but it's clear that free-to-play games remain the kings of all apps. In November 92 percent of all iOS apps and 98 percent of all Android apps were free-to-play, according to Distimo. Those numbers rose significantly this year, and though Apple still leads, Google is gaining fast. (via Venturebeat)
