Google Maps director Daniel Graf revealed the news in a company blog post on Wednesday and detailed how the new app is designed to make it easier for the user to navigate traffic and for finding places to drink, sleep or shop.

The app includes a new five-star rating system to see how friends and other people have rated places (like restaurants and bars), while “Zagat” badges and curated lists can be used for quickly spotting expert-approved places.

But with these new changes sees the departure of some older features, such as Latitude and check-ins, both which will be removed from older versions of Google Maps on August 9.

The new Google Maps for Android app is now available on Google Play and is compatible with devices running Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) and Jelly Bean (Android 4.1 and above).

The iOS app will support devices running iOS 6.0 and above and will launch in the near future.
