Google gets bigger iPad footprint, buys Quickoffice

The purchase promises to give Google a stronger presence on the iPad and strengthens the company’s portfolio of applications designed to appeal to business and enterprise customers. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Quickoffice lets iPad and Android users edit, share and synch Microsoft Office documents on those devices and other computers. Last month the Dallas-based company said it was adding 60,000 users per day and almost two million per month. Quickoffice uses a freemium model also favored by Google, where the basic app for individuals is free and more enhanced versions have a per user, per month charge. 

Google’s engineering director Alan Warren announced the purchase in a short blog post entitled: 

“Google + Quickoffice = get more done anytime, anywhere” 

Warren said in part: 

“Today, consumers, businesses and schools use Google Apps to get stuff done from anywhere, with anyone and on any device. Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we'll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite,” said Warren.

Alan Masarek, Quickoffice Co-Founder and CEO, said in a post at the company’s site that the deal with Google is a good match. 

“By combining the magic of Google's intuitive solutions with Quickoffice's powerful products, our shared vision for anytime, anywhere productivity can only grow,” said Masarek.
