Speaking at Motorola and Verizon Wireless’s Droid event earlier this week, Google chairman Schmidt said that 1.3 million Android devices are ‘activated’ each day, but revealed this figure stands at just 70,000 for Android-powered tablets. Schmidt himself admitted that Google was “late” in coming to the tablet market.
We’re not quite sure if an activation is a new purchase or when a new device hits a data network for the first time, but either way this would indicate that tablets account for around 5% of all Android activations.
Meanwhile, in the same week, Google also posted the latest figures on Android penetration via its Android Developer blog.
The post, which looked at the number of Android devices having accessed the Google Play store between August 23 and September 4, revealed that around 86% of Android devices are between 3 and 5-inches, with this share falling sharply to 6.5% for 4-7 inch models and to 4.7% for 7 to 10-inch tablets.
And as ever, figures indicated that Android continues to be dominated by older versions of the mobile OS like Gingerbread, which accounts for 57.5% of Android products, although Ice Cream Sandwich (20.8%) has risen to 20.8% of all devices.
The tablet-only Honeycomb (Android 3.0) is on 2.1% of Android models, while the new Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) has hit 1.2% of devices. This is however the latest iteration of Android, having launched in June, and is only on a small number of models including Google’s Nexus 7 tablet and Amazon’s Iconia Tab A210.
