The daily deals website launched the free Breadcrumb POS iPad app (free, iTunes) on Tuesday, with the app now available from the Apple App Store.

As with competing apps from Square, Revel, ShopKeep and others, the app aims to cater for retailers and small businesses by allowing them to take MasterCard, Visa, Discover and cash payments with their Apple tablets.

They can also log transactions, manage menu items and issue refunds, as well as process credit cards, email receipts and view real-time data analysis on sales. Free 24/7 telephone support is provided too, which is useful for businesses starting out with iPad point-of-sale for the first time.

Groupon, in return, charges a credit card processing fee of 1.8% plus 15 cents of each transaction (there are no monthly fees), although the company intends to waive the first $5,000 credit card transactions in order to entice new businesses to sign up.

Signing up is pretty easy, with businesses simply required to download the app, sign up for a payment app and then connect their iPad to a card swiper and Groupon’s optional printer.

Breadcrumb POS won’t be replacing the Pro edition, which starts at $99 per month. That service is more aimed towards restaurants and bars who Groupon says “require a more extensive set of features such as a check and table management and time clock functionality”.

Groupon’s activity in this space is a result of the company acquiring Breadcrumb for a rumored $10-15 million in May of last year.
