High time – FAA recommends flyers use ‘most’ devices during take-off and landing

The group says that passengers should be allowed to watch videos, type on documents and listen to music when their planes take off and land, but advises prohibitions when it comes to data-based activities (such as browsing) and voice calls.

Should the FAA take on-board these optional recommendations, the changes are likely to come into effect in early 2014.

Amazon responded to the news by saying that it is “about time” the changes were made.

“We’ve been fighting for our customers on this issue for years – testing an airplane packed full of Kindles, working with the FAA, and serving as the device manufacturer on this committee,” said Amazon’s Drew Herdener.

“This is a big win for customers and, frankly, it’s about time.”
