How the new Apple/IBM alliance plans to dominate the enterprise mobility market

With a joint statement followed by a series of interviews at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, Ginni Rometty and Tim Cook, respectively CEO of IBM and Apple, unveiled yesterday a strong and exclusive alliance to address the enterprise mobility market.

Here are the highlights:

  • IBM will develop 100+ apps for both the iPhone and the iPad. So-called IBM MobileFirst for iOS Solutions will target the retail, healthcare, banking, travel and transportation, telecommunications and insurance industries, among others. The first apps will become available in the fall of 2014, others will follow in 2015. (Presumably, these apps will leverage the soon-to-launch iOS 8.)
  • IBM will sell and lease iOS devices to corporate customers. Through the new MobileFirst Supply and Management offering, IBM will also offer activation and management services for iPhone and iPad.
  • Apple will offer an Enterprise version of its AppleCare service. Apple will deliver 24/7 remote support while IBM will deliver on-site service.
  • IBM will offer a platform to deliver the services required for end-to-end enterprise capability, from analytics, workflow and cloud storage, to fleet-scale device management, security and integration. Services will include a private app catalog, data and transaction security services. This platform will be available through on-premise software solutions as well as through Bluemix, a development platform on the IBM Cloud Marketplace.
