Intel could launch new tablet processors in late 2014

August 21, 2013

Citing sources in the supply chain, Digitimes reports that Intel will ship a small number of sample Cherry Trail processors to vendors in late 2013, and goes onto claim that the chipmaker could reveal more details on the new system-on-chip (SoC) at Computex 2014.

But Intel, the world’s largest chipmaker, will also be turning its gaze to the smartphone market with sources convinced that the firm will announce the 22nm Merrifield SoC in late 2013, followed by the Moorefield and Morganfield designs in the first quarter of 2015.

Merrifield is expected to offer a performance boost of around 50% and a longer battery life when compared against Intel’s current smartphone chip, the Clover Trail+.

This news comes under a month before the Intel Developer Forum, which takes place in San Francisco from September 10 to September 12.

The conference is expected to see the debut of Intel’s 22nm Bay Trail-based processors (with the Silvermont architecture) and the Bay Trail-T processors for tablets running Windows 8.1 and Android 4.2
