iPad rivals reportedly considering giving away free or heavily discounted tablets

Taiwanese tech website Digitimes says that most of these vendors are unable to lower their costs to compete, and so will instead look to partner with telco providers to offer their tablets at a discounted price, or even for free.

Apple currently dominates the high-end tablet market and accounts for around 70% of all tablets, while both Amazon and Google have made a play at budget consumers with the $159 Kindle Fire and $199 Nexus 7, respectively.

Microsoft is also set to jump into this already congested market with its high-end Surface tablet family, which are expected to compete with Apple’s iPad when they launch on October 26.

Verizon Wireless recently added a financing option designed to make tablet purchases, including the iPad and Android models, more affordable via monthly payments for devices costing a minimum of $349.99.
