Several reports today pointed to Chinese tech website DoNews (in Chinese) after the source reporting that Apple already has Retina Displays in development with a view to using these on the second-generation iPad mini.

The same source reveals that display panel supplier AU Optronics is “already working on” a 2048 x 1536 Retina display for the iPad mini 2, which could be set for release in the fall of 2013.

A separate report from MENAFN meanwhile claimed that Apple will be using Sharp’s IGZO display technology in the tablet in order to make the display thinner and more power efficient, while retaining the same levels for color and brightness.

If such plans are to be believed it would give the next iPad mini a greater pixel density than the current, fourth-generation iPad (324 pixels per inch versus a PPI for 264 for the latest iPad).

The current iPad Mini has a 7.9-inch 1024 x 768 resolution display.
