Walmart gives Amazon’s Kindle and Kindle Fire the boot

September 21, 2012

"We have recently made the business decision to not carry Amazon tablets and eReaders beyond our existing inventory and purchase commitments," said Wal-Mart, in a memo to store managers sent earlier this week.

"This includes all Amazon Kindle models current and recently announced." Walmart added that it will continue to sell existing inventory of the Kindle and Kindle Fire until it runs out of all models.

Walmart said that the move has been introduced in the best interests of its 'overall merchandising strategy', which most likely means that it will increasingly look to compete with Jeff Bezos’ firm in the online sales space. The fact that Amazon doesn’t generate much revenue from each hardware sale may have also contributed to the decision.

Walmart will continue selling tablets from Apple, Barnes & Noble, Google, Samsung and Sony.

Earlier this year, Target stopped selling Amazon’s Kindle family, although other mainstream retailers like Best Buy and RadioShack remain committed to selling Kindle devices.
