ZDNet writer Mary Jo Foley reports that Microsoft will hold a “private evening reception for select guests” in the lead-up to the formal launch, which will take place just before midnight at the Best Buy store in Union Square, New York City.
In something of a surprise, members of the press won’t be invited to the launch party, which will be overseen by Surface general manager Panos Panay and members of the Windows team.
Microsoft has been forced to change tack with the Surface Pro launch, with the Redmond giant having used the now-closed Microsoft retail store in Times Square, New York to launch its Surface RT tablet back in October.
The Surface Pro is due to become available on February 9 with prices starting at $899 for the entry-level 64GB model, a tablet which, according to recent reports, comes with just 23GB of free storage.
The tablet will be sold in the U.S. and Canada through all Microsoft retail stores, microsoftstore.com and at Staples and Best Buy locations.
