The new logo shows four colored squares and a ‘Segoe’ font, which is more conventional than the black italic writing used for Microsoft's last logo.
The new badge actually looks rather similar to the new Windows 8 logo, and indeed a Microsoft promotional video on the new logo seems to indicate that the colors are a tribute to Office (with its red logo), Windows (blue) and Xbox (green). The inclusion of yellow was not explained however, although this presumably harks at Microsoft's enterprise services.
"It’s been 25 years since we’ve updated the Microsoft logo and now is the perfect time for a change,” wrote Jeff Hansen, general manager of brand strategy at Microsoft, in a blog post.
“This is an incredibly exciting year for Microsoft as we prepare to release new versions of nearly all of our products. From Windows 8 to Windows Phone 8 to Xbox services to the next version of Office, you will see a common look and feel across these products providing a familiar and seamless experience on PCs, phones, tablets and TVs.
“This wave of new releases is not only a reimagining of our most popular products, but also represents a new era for Microsoft, so our logo should evolve to visually accentuate this new beginning."
So, where can you expect to see Microsoft’s new logo? Hansen explains that, from today, the logo will be used on Microsoft.com, in the firm’s three retail stores (Boston, Seattle’s University Village and Bellevue, Washington), and on TV ads. You should also see the logo on product packaging.
