Microsoft looks ready to take on the iPad mini with a mini of its own

September 14, 2013

The Microsoft Surface "mini" (or whatever Microsoft ends up calling it) will ship this year, a bit after Microsoft releases new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 models, according to Paul Thurrott at Supersite for Windows.

The Surface mini is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm processor, running Windows RT 8.1, (not Windows 8.1) and feature an 8-inch screen.

Microsoft has been discounting and in some cases bundling its Cover keyboard accessories. But it’s not known if such deals will continue with the new models.

Microsoft recently confirmed that Windows 8.1 will be publicly available starting October 18. A raft of new Windows 8.1-powered tablets are expected to be released around that time, sporting 8-inch and 10.6-inch displays as well as other form factors, in time for the holiday shopping season.
