NBC launched two new iPad and Android apps in the lead up to the London Olympics but has received widespread criticism for its coverage of the event so far.
The broadcaster has been slammed for a delayed broadcast schedule of the Games, poor commentary and ad-filled online viewing experience, and even prompted ‘#NBCFail’ to trend on Twitter earlier in the week.
Speaking to journalists earlier today, NBC research president Alan Wurtzel countered the criticism by reeling off a host of stats on how mobile devices are being used to watch the games:
- Nearly 28 million people have visited NBCOlympics.com, 8% higher compared to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
- 64 million total video streams have been served across all platforms – a 182% increase over Beijing.
- While 60% of video streams are “online (desktop web), another 45% comes from a combination of tablets and phones.
- NBC’s mobile apps have been downloaded more than six million times since the start of the Games.
- Nearly 4.6 million people have visited NBC’s mobile website, double the number from four years ago.
