In its latest report on people using its Wi-Fi and signal finder Android app (free, Google Play), OpenSignal reveals that there are now three times (11,868 in 2013) as many ‘distinct’ Android products compared to one year ago (3,997). The firm says these devices run eight different versions of the operating system.

On a positive note, the firm did find that newer versions of the OS account for a greater number of products, with Jelly Bean (Android 4.1 and 4.1) representing 37.9% of all users. Another 23.3% of users owned an Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) smartphone or tablet.

In amongst this bad news for developers, there was at least one ray of light for Samsung. OneSignal revealed that the Korean smartphone and tablet maker was the leading manufacturer with 47.5% of all devices.
