New rumor suggests the next iPad will look a lot like the iPad mini

January 22, 2013

Citing sources from inside Apple OEM partner Foxconn, Chinese-language website My Driver claims that the next iPad will have a narrow border and a chamfered edge design, which will essentially make it look a lot “like a larger version of the iPad mini”.

The source added that the tablet is codenamed “Sapoxx” and, if Google and Bing translations are to be trusted, even hinted that Apple could be working on a cheaper iPad. Details on this possible device were, however, very vague at the time of going to press.

The report is by no means the first to put forward the idea of a 9.7-inch iPad with slimmer bezels. KGI Securities analyst Kuo Ming-Chi last week predicted the same thing, while Japanese source Makotakara said that the model will be 4mm shorter, 17mm narrower and 2mm thinner.

A number of analysts reckon that Apple will release the fifth-generation iPad and second-generation iPad mini in March, with the latter reportedly set to come with a high-resolution Retina Display and dual-core A6X processor.
