A new twist on giant iPad rumor – it’s a desktop for school kids

Citing sources from the “upstream supply chain”, Taiwanese news website Digitimes – which has a spotty record when it comes to predicting Apple product announcements – recently claimed that Apple has contracted Quanta Computer to mass produce the tablet in the second half of 2014. The Digitimes report follows other recent reports that the device will launch later next year.

But Computerworld columnist Mike Elgan thinks the reports are off base.

"I find it very hard to believe that schools would buy 12.9-in. near-4K quality tablets and let kids take them home in their backpacks," says Elgan. "That's why a 12.9-in. iPad for the education market makes sense only if it's designed to be used in the classroom exclusively, essentially as a desktop computer."
