FarmVille 2: Country Escape is Zynga's attempt to retake casual gamers from its competitors on tablets and smartphones.
The company has launched mobile games in the past, but it's been unable to recapture the success it once had on Facebook, when it had more than 80 million monthly active players. FarmVille 2: Country Escape aims to fix that by being a "mobile-first game," Zynga Vice President of Games Jonathan Knight told GamesBeat.
Amazingly, this is the first time Zynga has actually tried to redesign the FarmVille series for play on mobile devices rather than just porting its existing Facebook versions. As a result Country Escape is designed for shorter play sessions and is a standalone title not reliant on its browser-based predecessors.
Knight said that Zynga is "being very careful with this one." This is one of the first big moves from Zynga since former Microsoft Xbox head Don Mattrick took over as CEO last year. FarmVille 2: Country Escape will launch on iOS and Android this summer, with a Kindle release later on.
