Google has updated its Google Play Game Services to include both real-time and asynchronous multiplayer for Android and iOS games.
That means that starting today, game developers will be able to enable players of certain games to play with others on a different operating system. Android and iOS players will be able to compete directly, as long as developers choose to enable them to do so.
The feature lands first in the Google Play Games Services plug-in for the Unity game engine, but Google has also announced an early version for non-Unity games that will ultimately allow those games to support cross-platform play as well. No telling when that will fully surface, though.
Earlier this month it was rumored that Microsoft is likewise looking to bring Xbox Live functionality to iOS and Android. What's next, Apple's Game Center on Android and Windows Phone? Hm. Maybe! (via The Verge)
