Apple gets official Pentagon OK to compete with BlackBerry

by David Needle

May 17 2013

Apple snared a huge new sales opportunity now that the Pentagon has approved iOS devices to run on its networks

BlackBerry has long been the preferred device provider for military use thanks to its established security features, but now the iPad and iPhone, according to Bloomberg, as well as Samsung devices (also recently approved) will compete for contracts with the Defense Department.

The Defense Department has over 600,000 mobile devices, including 470,000 BlackBerrys, 41,000 Apple products and 8,700 devices running Google’ Android operating system, according to the agency.

But many of the Apple and Android products currently in use aren’t connected to military networks except for testing.
