New Android app promises to help U.S. troops on the battlefield

by TabTimes Staff

October 17 2013

An innovative new app called Android Terminal Assault Kit is helping the U.S. military to get more information on the battlefield.

Military Times reports that the app – simply abbreviated as ATAK -- has been developed by Cambridge-based research outfit Draper Laboratory and says that it can be used to call in an airstrike by tapping on the enemy’s position on a map.

ATAK can also be used to let soldiers know the whereabouts of allies and enemies as well as display live fees from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Special forces have reportedly already used the ATAK app in a “handful of missions” with the app expected to be rolled out to more divisions from next year.
