FAA approves Microsoft's Surface tablet for cockpits

Microsoft's Surface Pro 2 joins the iPad on the FAA's list of approved pilot EFBs (Electronic Flight Bags) for all phases of flight.

The news follows Delta's announcement that it plans to deploy 11,000 of Microsoft's hybrid tablets in its cockpits (the iPad was in the running, but Surface got the nod).

While several other airlines are going with the iPad, Delta said it preferred the readability, productivity apps and other features of the Surface 2.

Tablet adoption means pilots can switch from heavy paper charts and books, potentially saving airlines millions of dollars in fuel costs.
