A North Carolina school district looks set to splash out on tablets for 17,000 middle school students having received a federal grant of $30 million.

The Guilford County Schools district is due to receive $30 million through a federal Race to the Top District grant and is expected to use the funding to provide tablets for its sixth to eighth-grade students, as well as provide related training to students, families, teachers and principals.

The spending will even see the district hire additional technology coordinators, presumably to facilitate the education on the as-of-yet unidentified tablets.

Guilford County Schools, which serves 72,000 students across 124 schools, isn’t the first education establishment to embark on such a big deployment of tablet computers.

Earlier this year, San Diego spent $15 million on deploying 26,000 iPads, while Long Island University has to date rolled out 16,000 iPads to students with many more apparently on the way.
