The Guilford County Schools in North Carolina plans to deploy 21,215 Amplify tablets, a specialty 10-inch Android tablet designed for K-12.
The tablets will be used by students and teachers in 24 middle schools throughout the district beginning in the 2013-2014 school year.
Amplify describes its device as “more than just a tablet" and more of a turnkey learning solution organized around the school day.
A number of Google services (e.g. Drive, GMail, Maps, Google+) are included, as well as third-party education content and tools to manage the student’s devices, share multimedia resources and help with lesson planning and quizzes.
“We aren’t recycling consumer goods for the classroom,” said Amplify CEO Joel Klein. “We are a company that is 100-percent focused on education.”
According to Futuresource, tablet sales into K-12 topped 3.5 million units in 2012, a jump of 340% on 2011.
