Redesigned Square Reader is thinner, sleeker and uses custom chip

by TabTimes Staff

December 9 2013

A new release of the Square Reader is redesigned and thinner than the original electronics payment peripheral for mobile devices.

The redesigned reader is now 45% thinner - as thin as an iPhone. And that was one of the design goals, to make Square a better complement to the devices it's being paired with.

A custom chip now runs all of Square’s card data interpretation, encryption and transfer functions. Significantly, the chip is also designed to make Square’s card reading and transfer much more efficient as well as work with a greater number of devices without problems.
