A new Apple patent application refers to a magnetic connector like the one used to attach Smart Covers to the current iPad that could be used to connect a variety of accessories.
Published today by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, the patent application describes how a number of different accessories, including speaker docks, trackpads and keyboards, drawing tablets, radio wave antennas, cameras, game controllers and card readers could be connected to the smart connector system.
The document also describes how two iPads might be linked together via an intermediary magnetic hinge dock that connects to the smart magnetic link in each.
Like other big tech firms, Apple files many patents, but only a small percentage ever become commercial products or parts of other products. On the other hand, with a raft of competitors in the tablet field, it wouldn't be surprising to see Apple do something to try and further distinguish the iPad.
