LeWeb 2011: Path will come to tablets in ‘post PC era’
Path CEO Dave Morin said that the firm will support tablets in future
Paris, France -- Speaking at LeWeb conference in Paris today, former Facebook developer Dave Morin says that his new company, social network journal Path, will create a tablet app, and claims this is now a ‘post PC era’.
Path was described by Morin as a modern journal, which can be shared with close family and friends via Facebook, Tumblr and Foursquare. The app is currently available for iPhone and Android, with Path having just launched version two of its iPhone app. Morin said that tablet support is not too far away.
“I think we will definitely do tablets,” said Morin. “At the moment, we’ve tried to specialize for the small screen of the iPhone, and the iPad takes a different level of focus. It’s a different design and we want to make sure we do it right.”
Path aims to be ubiquitous for products. “We’re all focused on mobile right now and we really believe in the post-PC era. Mobile is growing at such a fast rate.”
Morin also dismissed the possibility of Path developing HTML 5 apps, saying that the company has already tried and been unimpressed with the quality of the apps. “It may happen in future, but the kind of quality we want is not possible at the moment. We want it to be fast, responsible to touch and for us, achieving the intimate experience of Path wouldn’t be possible through HTML 5.”
Morin said that the Path now has over one million users, but did admit that the private nature of the app has seen the company struggle to make consumers aware of the platform. However, to counter this, Path has now added SMS and Facebook recommendations so to allow users to spread the word to families and friends.
