Apple tweaks App Review Guidelines to ensure child safety

by Doug Drinkwater

August 15 2013

Apple has updated its App Review Guidelines document in an attempt to improve child safety and cut-down on in-app gambling.

As MacRumors reports, the changes are designed so that Apple complies with the U.S. government’s recently-expanded Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which stipulates that apps must not collect personal data from children under 13 years old without ‘verifiable parental consent’.

Apple has gone one step further in this by detailing that developers must not collect photos, videos or audio from an underage user. The App Review Guidelines also ask developers to not allow underage children to make in-app purchases.

“Apps aimed at children must contain a privacy policy, cannot tailor advertising to in-app activity and must not contain links to content outside the app or allow children to make purchases without verified parental content”.

The document also reveals that gambling apps must be ‘free to download’ but stresses that there must not options to purchase credits or currency when in the app.

(App discovery and monetization will be among the key topics of discussion at the upcoming Tablet Ecosystem conference coming to New York on November 13, 2013).
