Microsoft’s new ad for the Surface 2 tablets just doesn’t add up

by TabTimes Staff

November 11 2013

Microsoft’s big marketing campaign to promote its Surface 2 tablets has got off to a sticky start. One of the firm’s first ads has been ridiculed after it showed that the tablet’s Excel app couldn’t add up seven numbers.

The San Francisco billboard, which was first spotted by Apple Insider, depicts a Surface tablet running Excel. The spreadsheet is titled ‘Hawaii Budget’ and attempts to add up all the costs expected on the holiday.

Beady-eyed journalists spotted that the seven numbers totalled $9,500 – some $500 more than the correct final figure.

This news comes less than a month after Microsoft’s outspoken PR Frank Shaw dismissed Apple’s own IWork suite as being “struggling” and “lightweight” productivity apps that are “less powerful” than Microsoft Office.
