Pioneering tablet news readers Flipboard has bought rival app Zite from CNN and also struck a content deal with the cable news network.
Flipboard co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Mike McCue said during a conference call with reporters that Zite's technology and recommendation engine, which helps readers discover content, were what drew Flipboard to the deal.
"We are going to integrate that technology into Flipboard," McCue said. He also said Zite's days as a standalone product are numbered; subscribers will be encouraged to switch to Flipboard.
Flipboard which already boasts over 100 million users, makes most of its money from advertising; the app is free.
"Our goal is to get the things that are great about Zite into Flipboard before shutting it down," Mike Klaas, Zite's cofounder and CTO, said in a blog post. "We will also build a way for you to transition your data from Zite into Flipboard. Until then (for six months at a minimum), we will continue supporting Zite."
