Apple plans to make Maps a contender in iOS 8

Google Maps still rules for navigation, but Apple is determined to make its Maps app a strong competitor after its bug-filled, disastrous launch back in 2012.

Currently, Apple’s Maps app points you to third-party apps for transit directions, which is a hassle.

The biggest changes will come in Apple's next major update to its mobile operating system, iOS 8. New features will include the addition of transit directions and a ton of new data from a variety of sources, according to 9to5Mac.

The report also says Apple is exploring things like augmented reality and improved indoor navigation for future versions of its Maps app.
