Avaya’s unified communications and collaboration desktop application, Flare Communicator, has now been made available for the iPad in the form of a free application.

The app represents a spin-off from the Flare Desktop Video Service software, which came to market last year, with the only difference being that the new iPad version does not currently support video calling, although that is reportedly being lined up for future editions.

Features of the app include the ability to find business people via a contact card, and start an instant message, voice call or email, simply by touching on that contact. The app, which works over WiFi and 3G networks, also allows users to simultaneously manage two voice calls, supports multi-tasking and enables users to utilize cellular or Wi-Fi data channels to reduce costs with cellular expenses.

The app is available for free download , but does require the user to have an Avaya Aura license, which is available for $100. Avaya says that businesses using the desktop Avaya Aura 6.1 (or later) software are able to obtain up to 50 client access licenses to Flare Communicator at no extra cost up until January 30th as part of a special promotion.

The firm has called Flare Communicator an 'extension of your enterprise voice systems' and is hoping to bring the app to other platforms later on in 2012, including for Windows desktop environments and Android-based tablets.
