Mobiles Republic, the publisher of the News Republic and Appy Geek mobile and tablet apps, has just closed a Series B investment round of $6 million from Intel Capital and two other venture capitalists.
France-based Mobiles Republic operates five news aggregation apps on iOS, Android and Windows and works with 800 publishers (including TabTimes, which is featured under "Tablet computers" in Appy Geek) to show the full content of partners' articles, with an ad revenue-sharing model.
This makes it stand out from most other news aggregation apps, which usually rely on free RSS and social feeds and which share no or little revenue with content sources.
While having a strong international and multilingual presence, News Republic and its sister apps have not enjoyed yet the same popularity in North America.
This latest round of funding should help Mobiles Republic raise its profile in the US, as well as help develop its sales and marketing efforts. The round is led by Intel Capital. Two European VC firms, XAnge Private Equity and Creathor Venture, have also participated in the funding.
