Has Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn already started shipping the iPad 3 to the U.S.?
Has Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn already started shipping the iPad 3 to the U.S.?

The company won’t admit it exists, no one outside Apple knows for sure what features it will have and you can’t pre-order it. But the rumored imminent release of the iPad 3 continues to grab headlines.

The latest report indicates the iPad 3‘s release may indeed be on track for a March 7 unveiling, while another report states the new device’s price could be higher than the current iPad 2.

The site 9to5Mac says purported shipping documents reveal Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn made secretive shipments via cargo planes to three major U.S. cities beginning on February 26. The article’s source is an English translation from a Twitter-like, Chinese website, Sina Weibo.

The translation indicates initial shipments were sent to Chicago, Los Angeles and New York:

“Received friends inside information, Chengdu International Airport night cargo charter flights, said the owner of the security demanding, and in private that the Chengdu Fu X Kang new products. Takes note of the location of the United States (ORD Chicago, JFK New York, LAX in Los Angeles).”

A further translation of the document states:

Received friends inside information, Chengdu International Airport night cargo charter flights, said the owner of the security demanding, and in private that the Chengdu Fu X Kang new products. Takes note of the location of the United States (ORD Chicago, JFK New York, LAX in Los Angeles).”

Earlier reports indicated Apple has scheduled an event March 7 in San Francisco for the iPad 3 with availability set within a few weeks of the announcement. It’s also believed that a version of the iPad 2 will remain available at a reduced price.

A more expensive iPad 3?

Meanwhile, referring to another Chinese site, an article in MacRumors today states the iPad 3 could be priced starting at $579 for a 16GB+WiFi model and goes as high as $899 for a 64GB+WiFi+3G model.

The iPad 2 is currently priced at $499 for the 16GB+WiFi model.
