Rumor: Apple to release 5-inch tablet with Retina Display next year?

Japanese sources claim Apple is preparing a 5-inch tablet device

Japanese blog Macotakara claims that Apple is working towards the 2013 release of a 5-inch device with a high-resolution Retina-quality display.

The source says that the device will have a 1600 x 900 or 1280 x 960 resolution display, which could make things difficult for iOS developers who are currently building apps for the iPhone’s 640 x 960 resolution display, the iPad 1 and 2’s 1024 x 768 resolution and the new iPad’s 2048 x 1536 display.

We haven’t heard of Macotakara before, but Macrumors isn’t much of a fan, claiming that the source has had a ‘mixed track record in the past’ when it comes to breaking news.

Prior to the launch of the new iPad, there had been reports that Apple was preparing the 'iPad Mini'; a 7-inch or 7.85-inch tablet, which could launch as soon as Q3 of this year, according to Taiwanese source Digitimes. Samsung added to these rumors more recently when it spilled a document in early March, which detailed that Apple plans to launch a 7-inch tablet in the third quarter of this year.
