Amazon is reportedly preparing a second Kindle Fire to do battle with Google and quite possibly Apple in the emerging 7-inch tablet market.

Rumors have abound for some time now that Amazon is lining up a collection of Kindle Fire tablets, with more recent reports seemingly indicating that the first of what could be four models will turn up in July.

A new report from China Times (in Chinese) has gone one step further with that theory and – on the back of information from company insiders – claims that Amazon has ordered two million Kindle Fire 2 tablets to be delivered in August.

According to a previous report, the tablet will have a slightly better 1280 x 800 resolution screen, a move which will push Amazon into reducing the price of the current Kindle Fire to $149.

The 7-inch tablet space is certainly already stronger than it has ever been before with competition from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google and Samsung among others. That depth may get even stronger if rumors on a smaller iPad are to be believed.

Just last week, Google launched its first tablet, the 7-inch Nexus 7, which runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, boasts Nvidia’s quad-core Tegra 3 chipset and comes with 8GB or 16GB of memory. Prices for the tablet range between $199 and $249.
