Talk continues to do the rounds on a 7-inch iPad, with new reports uncovering a new photo of the tablet and suggesting that it may well debut before Christmas.

Supposed photos of the iPad Mini come courtesy of tech blog Gotta Be Mobile, which claims to have received the engineering samples from a ‘trusted source inside the Apple supply chain’.

The design sample is only a plastic mould to see how the iPad Mini will connect with tablet accessories, but nonetheless shows that the device may be thinner than the current iPad, and could have a speaker to each side of the 19-pin dock connector.

Meanwhile, in related news, UK retailer Dixons International (the company behind the Currys and PC World stores) looks like it expects the 7.85-inch iPad to tip up in time for Christmas.

Pocket Lint reports that the group has listed Apple’s ‘mystery device’ in its predictions for the top 10 best-selling Christmas gifts of 2012, and questions whether this could be the iPad Mini. It would certainly back up those previous reports that the tablet will launch in October.

The predictions list shows that Dixons thinks the new iPad will be the best selling device over the shopping season, with the Nexus 7 in third place, just ahead of Apple’s mystery product. Amazon’s Kindle Fire interestingly turns up at number six, which would indicate that Amazon has plans to launch the tablet in the UK before then.

Here’s a round-up of what we think the iPad Mini will come with:

  • 7.85-inch display with resolution of 1024 x 768 (although rumors have also abound on it having a Retina Display)
  • Prices to start from $299
  • To be launched in October
  • 16GB storage
